OK! I'm finally in the running. I'd appreciate any votes. You'll need a threadless account to vote.
Here's my first ever Threadless design. At the moment, I'm just putting it through the critique system to get some feedback on it, but if you generally like the design, please keep an eye out for my blog. Once I submit it, I'd appreciate your scoring. If you don't have a Threadless account (to score and buy and so on), you SHOULD! Threadless is an awesome site. [ check out the critique ]
So, I might as well come out with it. I was working on creating a new website where I would blog, and possibly have something bigger, grander, funner, but... I still haven't been able to get it off the ground. I've been messing around in other areas of my life, yet still not really accomplishing what I REALLY want to. Life happens so quickly... I do wish it would slow down a little.
And I've been living in Florida for three years now. I decided my tiny social circle needed some widening, so I joined a few groups on meetup. There are some events going on in November that I believe I will try and attend in hopes to make some new friends and expand my horizons. It seems like every time the weekend comes we have nothing to do... well, I'd like to change that. I might as well do it now before I have children, but I hope even when that day comes I can still go out and do things I like to do. Seems like some people just turn off completely once they have kids... I know it's hard to get baby sitters, but I just hope I make it somewhat of a priority in my life.
I really want to get more conencted to the art community in Orlando, so some of the groups I joined should help me do that. Today I got an email from one of the group coordinators for an art show coming up that I could possibly participate in, so I'm hoping that I can get that together.
In an attempt to possibly sell some more art to supplement my income, I've also added some new prints to my Etsy shop. Everyone seems to like my art, but I don't sell as much as I'd like to. I know the economy is down and yadaya, so I marked down the prices from $30 to $20 to hopefully entice some potential buyers. Hopefully I can keep this momentum up and continue to list pieces. I have a few more completed and scanned in, plus a few others in progress.
As a preview, here are some thumbnails of pieces you can find currently, or will soon in my shop!
OK, so I am trying to promote my art on Squidoo... let's see if it does anything. I posted some thumbnails of my art and linked to my Etsy shop. Check it out here:
eBay has lowered their fees, so I've decided to start listing some of my artwork in hopes to sell something. I'll post all of my listings here after I make them... if you see something you like, feel free to bid! I have a feeling that it will take some time to get what I want for my work, but if you really like my art, you might as well get it now while it's cheap ;)
This particular piece is called "Thoughtful" and is small (5"x7"), but fits perfectly in a standard size frame.
I'm starting to work bigger, and I like it! The only problem is that I can't scan it at home, so for now, enjoy some photos. I might not get it scanned until it sells, or I get a job and can go somewhere to get it scanned.
I really like it -- I'm tentatively calling it ocean scales because it reminds me of the water, and maybe some under sea plants. The colors were chosen based on that analysis of the final drawing, as well.
It's the usual prismacolor marker and archival ink, but I decided to throw in a little watercolor to keep things interesting, though the paper I used was not watercolor paper but bristol board, and it didn't take to watercolor that well. I shall have to experiment on some of my cotton rag paper next! I love cotton rag paper... it's wonderful for watercolor and other liquid mediums. It has a real weight to it, with great texture (not too rough, but not too fine either).
Here are some closeups:
I actually had a really good time experimenting with this... I'm thinking I will have to do some more painting! I thoroughly enjoyed it, which is a shocker because I have not really been a huge fan of painting aside from liquid acrylics and watercolor. I sort of like oil, but I hate the fact that it takes so long to dry... what can I say? I'm impatient! Plus the cleanup is a disaster -- I've ruined some nice brushes this way (I am careless sometimes, sigh). Acrylics, however, are so easy to clean up with (just add water!)... I think I am in love :) Anyway, let me know what you think! I have it for sale on Etsy, for anyone who is interested!
I just got back from the Art in the Yard show -- not sure if I've mentioned it on here yet, but it was a bit of a last minute event. Still, I had plenty of stock on hand and didn't have to do too much to get ready for it. Unlike other shows I've done I actually made some money... not stop the presses, I'm a millionaire amount, but definitely enough to make it worthwhile and not bitter. I know, it's just way too easy to be bitter, but really, I had a good time, it was nice to get out of the house and mingle with people that share some common interests. But hey, I guess getting showered with compliments is always good to uplift someone's spirit even without money involved.
People kept asking me if I participated at the Grandma Party, to which I gave them a puzzled look and said no at first. Apparently it was earlier today, and my jewelry and art would be perfect for it. I'll have to try it next year I guess! I've always wanted to do more shows but usually a fee is required and if it's outdoors you have to have a tent and etc, so I haven't put a lot of effort into finding them, I tried a few and totally bombed. Though if I was really honest with myself, my things have definitely gotten better, and the crowd tonight was much more in tune with what I'm selling, whereas my other ventures were mostly older people -- which is great, but my things just didn't catch their eye. I'm just sorry I didn't know about the Grandma party previously, otherwise I would have SO done it!
Now I just need to get my website up for this stuff...sigh. It seems like I'm always working on some website or another for my own projects, but really, I should get working on that ASAP. Especially now that I have some interest accumulating -- I definitely need to strike while the iron is hot (because this entry really needed at least one cliche).
Now this particular one is nothing too special -- mostly just creating different elements. This is not quite something I would send to the printer, but it's showing me different possibilities and generally familiarizing myself with Illustrator more. Of course, I've been using it a lot in my client work lately, but I'm continually trying to improve my skills to make me an even more versatile artist and designer.
I found an art show coming up December 8th on craigslist while I was looking for some new clients. They are looking for some artists and I really wanted to do it, but they needed me to come help out and put my art up December 1st, which, unfortunately next weekend I'm making a business trip (don't I sound all official like?!) to Jacksonville with John, and we won't be coming back until the late afternoon on Saturday, and then attending our friend Tim's birthday get together. I'm a little disappointed but I'm not sure if I'd be able to get enough work framed in time anyway.
I'm working on a new website for my art. It's going to have a gallery, plus a little shop where you can purchase original art, prints, and a few other items with my art on them. Make sure you bookmark the site, I'm hoping that it will be up within the next two weeks.
Today I finally bought some film for the Vivitar Wide and Slim I bought awhile ago. I've only snapped one of my 24 exposures, but I'm hoping that tomorrow I have a chance to get outside in the daylight and take some more. There's something about film cameras, I don't know. It's like opening a Christmas present -- you have a good idea what it is (according to your wish list) but you're still not entirely sure how it's going to turn out. It could be bad, embarrassing, or fabulous. Yeah, paying for processing the film kinda sucks, but it's a fun hobby anyway!
